How to Use ChatGPT in Nigeria: Beginner Guide to Your First Prompt on Your Phone

You hear about ChatGPT everywhere.

You have not used it yet for real work, and the help you have seen does not show a clear first step that fits your phone and your data.

If that is where you are, this guide is for you. You have heard everyone talk about ChatGPT. You have never opened it properly. You want plain steps on your phone, not grammar for developers.

By the end, you will know exactly how to create a free account, write a prompt that gets a useful answer on the first try, and copy five ready prompts for real tasks you already do.

What ChatGPT actually is (in one sentence)

ChatGPT is a chat assistant you type to in plain English and it types back with answers, drafts, ideas, and explanations.

You describe what you want, it produces a draft. You correct it, it fixes that draft. That loop is the whole skill. You are not coding. You are having a conversation with a very fast reader that remembers what you just said.

What you need before you start

You already have it.

• A phone (Android or iPhone) with internet. ChatGPT needs internet to work. It does not work offline.
• An email address, or a Google or Microsoft login. No NIN, no card needed for the free version.
• A small data bundle. Start on WiFi if you can. Text prompts use very little data. Voice and image prompts use more.

Step-by-step: Create your free account and send your first prompt on your phone

This is the phone-first workflow. It works the same on a laptop if you have one, but you do not need one.

Step 1 - Open ChatGPT

Pick one:

• Option A (app): Open Play Store or App Store, search ChatGPT by OpenAI, install.
• Option B (browser): Open your browser and go to chat.openai.com.

Step 2 - Create your account

Tap Sign up. Use your email, or Continue with Google or Microsoft. Confirm the email if it asks. Log in. That is the account. You are inside the chat window.

If you see a message about limits on the free plan, ignore it for now. Free access is enough to learn. Paid access (ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month as of September 2026) only matters after you already use the free version well.

Step 3 - Send your first prompt (copy this)

CLEAR ASK RULE: A good prompt names the task, the audience, and the format.

Tap the message bar at the bottom and paste this exact prompt. Then press send:

Help me write a polite WhatsApp message to a customer who asked for price yesterday and has not replied. I sell thrift wear in Yaba. Keep it short and friendly. Give me 2 options.

You will get two messages you can copy. That is the pattern. You asked clearly, you got something useful back.

Step 4 - Refine with a follow up

ChatGPT remembers the last message. You do not start over. You correct it like you correct a person. Paste this next:

Make the second option shorter. Add that delivery is available in Lagos today.

Watch how it keeps the meaning and fixes only what you asked. That follow up loop is how you avoid the frustration that makes beginners quit. You do not need a perfect first prompt. You need a second prompt that FIXES the first answer.

Step 5 - Try voice when typing is slow

In the app, tap the microphone icon and speak your prompt. ChatGPT writes it out for you and answers. This helps when you are on 3G, when typing is slow, or when you think better by speaking. On a slow connection, speak short sentences and send, instead of one long paragraph that fails halfway.

5 useful first prompts to copy (not theory)

Do not learn ChatGPT in the abstract (the general idea). Use it for one real task you already have. Copy, paste, and change the bracketed part to your own case.

1. For job seekers: CV bullet rewrite

Rewrite these 3 CV bullets to sound more result focused. Keep each bullet to one line. Here is my draft: [paste your 3 bullets]. Role I want is Customer Service Assistant.

2. For small business: Reply to price inquiry

Write a short reply to a customer who said "How much is delivery to Abuja?" My product is sneakers, price is 25,000 Naira, delivery to Abuja is 4,000 Naira and takes 2 days. Sound friendly and add a clear next step.

3. For students: Explain hard topic simply

Explain [photosynthesis] like you are explaining to a JS2 student. Use simple words, give 2 everyday examples, end with 3 quick questions I can use to test myself.

4. For content: Market research starter

List 5 questions people in Lagos ask on Google about buying a used phone. For each, give a one-sentence angle I could use to answer it in a WhatsApp status or short post.

5. For daily work: Summarise long text

Summarise this message into 5 bullet points and one action step: [paste the long message or note from your boss, customer, or school group].

How to pay (or not pay) in Nigeria

Free is where you START. The free plan lets you create an account, send prompts, and use the app. That is enough to learn and get real value.

ChatGPT Plus is the paid plan at $20 per month globally as of September 2026, which converts to roughly ₦30,000 to ₦34,000 depending on the exchange rate as of September 2026. Some Nigerian bank cards do not work for international payments. The guides that rank today note the workaround is a dollar card or virtual card where available, but many Nigerians never need Plus at the beginner stage.

Do not pay until free has become too slow or too limited for you. Your first win does not need payment. It needs one clear prompt sent today.

Stay safe and do not look foolish

• Do not paste your BVN, bank password, or any private PIN into ChatGPT. It does not need them.
• Review every answer before you send it to a customer or lecturer. ChatGPT can be confident and wrong. You are responsible for the final copy.
• Tell people it helped you draft. Do not submit an assignment or send a client proposal you have not read and understood.
• On a slow mobile connection, keep prompts short and send one at a time. It loads faster and fails less than a long paragraph.
